COVID≠ ISLAND

Changing how space is shared in order to create connection in a time of isolation

The concept Island responds to how the urban environment can react to COVID-19 and post COVID-19 era. The city is a network of thousands of small islands, which can seem, but what if there were connections between other islands? Ourselves, humans, are also individual islands, and we want interactions between the self and the people around us, and so we wish to provide a main street network to connect people and to help rebuild the links between “islands”.

The project is located in between Stavebank Rd and Helene St, across Elizabeth St, along with our main street Lakeshore Rd E. The original main street in Port Credit has obtained an objective percentage of tourism, therefore, the project is going to help maintain the attraction to tourism, as well as enhance the local economy. The project “Island” includes a redesign maintaining four vehicle lanes and two-way driving, by reducing vehicle lane width to 3m per lane, and applying two bicycle lanes on both sides of the Lakeshore Rd E. Also, the design retains northside curb parking, by adding greens as a partition to separate the bike lane and curb parking.

The bike parking areas along with public seating are been designed in a linear form. This echoes the cultural environment of Port Credit, to show its welcoming sense of combining nature and leisure to all the residents and people escaping from a fast-paced urban life.

Materials and fabrications: Considering the maintenance of mobility of the street during the construction period, seat blocks and stair seating will be preconstructed before sending to the site. Seat blocks and stair seating will use local western red cedar lumber with finger joints. On the seats, blockage of planting boxes are used to separate one another to keep the 2m social distance. These will be made with polycarbonate material with hollow space in the middle for planting. The public biking storage station and biking shelter will be constructed with translucent glass panels together with sandwich steel panel. In addition, kiosks are designed for small business owners, they can be pre-fabricated with ash wood and polycarbonate foldable panel. We decided to include more plant life and mostly naturally made material because we think the most essential thing after this pandemic is health.

Installation and other services: The implementation for the vehicle lanes needs to cover the original road lines and repaint the new lanes, then it will be refinished. A green belt will separate the curb parking. The bike lane will be constructed with precast concrete and delivered to the site. Kiosks and seats can be installed on site and build into the ground.
