Three new tools are now available on Bring Back Main Street. These open-source tools were developed by CUI with the support of our partners to help BIAs/BIDS and other main street stakeholders measure the impact of COVID on the street. The tools include:

Street Rebalancing Guide

The reallocation of road space away from motor vehicle traffic towards people walking, rolling, and cycling is essential to the health of our main streets. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Urban Project have developed the COVID-19 Street Rebalancing Guide which provides strategic and practical guidance to help cities and communities respond to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 outbreak on our streets.

Main Street Design Challenge: Now Accepting Submissions

The Main Street Design Challenge is now accepting great design ideas to transform Main Streets across the country.

This joint effort by CUI and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada invites participants to develop innovative, responsible, sustainable, and resilient design solutions that can be implemented during COVID-19 recovery and post-pandemic.

The submission portal is now open! Help us spread the word to placemakers, designers, and community organizers!

Five Bright Ideas

Signs of innovation, creativity, and resilience on our main streets:

B.C. Buy Local is an annual campaign that celebrates local business to promote the contributions that B.C. businesses make to our economy and our communities.
The movement to take back Montreal’s streets for pedestrians during this time of social distancing is spreading rapidly across the city. 
Halifax's Open City event returned as Re-Open City to celebrate local businesses in Halifax. The event supports business owners as they begin to reopen their doors, many who are noting the event is more popular than ever.  
“Reopening America: Strategies for Safer Buildings”, from the American Institute of Architects, is intended to provide design professionals, employers, building owners, and public officials with tools and resources for reducing risk when re-occupying buildings during the pandemic.
#Lights-On: Recovery and Reboot in Live Entertainment brings together leaders and experts to begin the important work of supporting the live entertainment sector in its recovery by building issue-specific strategies and practices.
